On beginning again without becoming unrecognisable
Moving has made “beginning again” feel less like erasure and more like re-composition. The materials remain: old instincts, inherited expectations, skills, affections. What changes is their arrangement—and therefore, perhaps, the life they make possible.
I used to imagine that a new place would produce a cleaner version of the self. Distance seemed capable of separating what I had chosen from what had merely accumulated. But arrival does not make a person blank. The old life travels quietly: in the pace at which I make decisions, in what feels familiar, in the standards I carry without remembering when I formed them.
Re-composition is not compromise.
To keep something is not necessarily to remain trapped by it. Continuity can be an active decision: this still belongs; this needs another position; this can finally be released. The work is not to become unrecognisable to myself, but to recognise more precisely which parts of the self deserve to continue.
In Singapore, this has appeared through ordinary choices rather than dramatic declarations: how I build a day, where I return, what kind of work feels worth the difficulty, and which forms of beauty make a place feel inhabitable. A life changes through arrangements long before it changes through explanations.
A beginning with memory.
Perhaps the gentlest kind of beginning is one that does not demand a betrayal of the past. It asks for attention instead: to see inherited forms clearly, to understand what they once protected, and to decide whether they still serve the life now being made.
I am not beginning from nothing. I am beginning from here—with more distance, more material, and a growing willingness to arrange it differently.
